Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Accurate, Non-Invasive Imaging for Musculoskeletal Conditions
At Physio Resolutions we are proud to offer Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound. We are the only clinic in Norfolk that can offer this alongside an injury assessment and treatment. Ultrasound is a cutting-edge tool that allows our experienced physiotherapists to assess and diagnose a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. This non-invasive, radiation-free imaging technique provides real-time visual insights into your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints, helping us pinpoint the exact source of pain and guide more effective treatment.
What is Musculoskeletal Ultrasound?
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a safe and precise imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture detailed images of the body’s soft tissues. Unlike X-rays, which mainly show bones, ultrasound provides clear pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joints, making it ideal for diagnosing issues such as:
- Tendon injuries (e.g., rotator cuff, Achilles tendonitis)
- Ligament sprains and tears
- Muscle strains
- Joint inflammation or effusion
- Nerve entrapment
- Bursitis
- Tendonitis
- Arthritis
Benefits of Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
- Real-time imaging: View structures in motion to better assess dynamic conditions, such as muscle contractions or joint movement.
- Non-invasive and safe: No radiation exposure, making it a safe option for repeated evaluations.
- Accurate diagnosis: Detects subtle soft tissue injuries that might not be visible on X-rays.
- Guides treatment and monitors treatment effectiveness: Helps tailor physiotherapy interventions, such as exercise programs, and assists in planning any necessary follow-up procedures.
- Immediate results: Get results during your session, allowing for faster diagnosis and treatment planning.
Who Can Benefit from Musculoskeletal Ultrasound?
If you’re experiencing persistent pain, swelling, limited mobility or treatment which is not working. Diagnostic ultrasound can provide valuable insights. Common conditions evaluated include:
- Sports injuries
- Work-related injuries
- Chronic joint pain
- Repetitive strain injuries
- Pre- and post-surgical assessments
Diagnostic ultrasound is not indicated for spinal conditions. We do not scan ‘lumps and bumps’ unless these are an incidental finding.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
During your appointment, your physiotherapist will apply a small amount of gel to the area being examined and use an ultrasound probe to capture images. The process is painless and quick, and is carried out within a physiotherapy assessment taking around 30-40 minutes. You will be able to see the images on the screen, and our experts will discuss the findings with you in real time, providing clarity and peace of mind.
